j,
when you print this out it prints like a book that needs to be bound so that pages are all weird , you'll have to cut it up at school or something to read it with any degree of comfort.

Frivolity and Unction

Hey V, Does this go somewhere?

So is the problem that activism is a measure of things being done, getting stuff done –manifesting change and doing 'good' work, whereas art is, or at least should, be viewed, made and understood as 'bad, silly and frivolous'. But too many (in, or near, Art) have too much at stake to "summon up the moral courage to admit that what we do has no intrinsic value or virtue"?

But then, what happens when all the 'good' work is done?

In the case of doctors verses artists, Angela Melitopoulos once asked a group of us "Why do you think art is important? Really? If medicine could cure everyone of everything, but we then had no art, what would be the use of being 'cured'!"

A giant block of granite arrived at her studio.

"I have arrived" announced the giant block of granite.

"Blimey, so you have," she said. "Are you here to see John? 'Cos he's just popped out to pick up a filing cabinet. He shouldn't be too long, though. You can wait if you want. I can put the kettle on."

"Stop." Boomed the block "I am not here to see John."

"Oh, right." she replied, the corners of her mouth shrugged.

An awkward silence.

"Don't you need me?" the block asked.

"Erm, no, not really. Sorry. You're a bit big and hard for me.... I'm making fake rotating mountains out of papier mache at the moment." The block looked dejected. Quickly she said "You can hang out for a bit, if you like, though. Are you sure you don't want a tea, or something?"

"No thank you. I do not drink tea."
